Received fuselage kit, which also included back-ordered tips for vertical stabilizer and stabilator. Started installation of vertical stabilizer tip. Saving full inventory of fuselage kit for the weekend.
Completed installation of vertical stabilizer tip fairing.
Trimmed stabilator tips and checked fit. Found that the tips leave a gap at the trailing edge. Ed/Rans confirmed that this is how the production tips are fitting as well. Will wait for any feedback from the Rans Clan forum before deciding how to proceed. Continued inventory of the fuselage kit.
Continued inventory of the fuselage kit.
No work.
Completed inventory of the fuselage kit. Installed stabilator tips - will figure out the final solution to gap at trailing edge later on. Opted not to do optional reinforcement of the stabilator tips.
Started forward fuselage assembly. Completed initial assembly and transfer drilling on firewall assembly. Firewall parts ready for prep and priming. Started instrument panel assembly.
Continued instrument panel assembly.
Completed instrument panel assembly. Drilled nutplate holes on instrument panel frame to #18 for screw clearance. Note that there are two holes on KPFU0459 that do not have corresponding holes punched on KPFU0546 - these need to be drilled out. Instrument panel assembly ready for deburring, priming, and priming.
Purchased sandblaster for cleaning steel parts - started assembling it. Disassembled the instrument panel assembly.
Completed sandblaster assembly.
Polished edges on aluminum parts from instrument panel and firewall assemblies.
Sandblasted steel parts for firewall assembly. Primed all parts. Painted steel parts with gloss black topcoat. Assembled instrument panel and riveted. Verified instrument panel fit by drilling holes to #16 and fitting temporarily to instrument panel frame with short #8 screws. Started firewall assembly.
Finished firewall assembly and riveted all except steel engine mount supports. All stainless steel rivets put in wet.
Drilled mounting holes for nutplates in floor channel. (Thanks for the tip, Glenn!) Clecoed floor channels to firewall assembly, and laid out bulkhead channels for assembly.
Clecoed bulkhead channels between floor channels. Clecoed on belly skin to floor channels and firewall.
Started transfer drilling floor channels to firewall assembly.
Finished transfer drilling floor channels to firewall assembly. Started transfer drilling belly skin to floor channels.
Finished drilling belly skin. Clecoed floorboard in place and transfer drilled. (Left belly skin on while drilling to help retain position of floor channels.) Discovered that the 3/16" nutplates are NOT all in the same places on the left and right floor channels. Drilled nutplate mountings in 2 places on floor channel. Will rivet through the extra 3/16" to a small backer washer due to over size hole in the 2 incorrectly placed nutplate locations. Started disassembly for deburring/polishing/priming.
Brush primered small areas on the floor channels and bulkhead channels, and number pieces to ensure correct reassembly. (The mark will show through the main primer coat.) Completed disasssembly.
No work.
